Wenger snubs Aubameyang, name Kanu best January signing

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has named Nwankwo Kanu as his best-ever January signing ahead of club captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Wenger signed Kanu from Inter Milan for a reported fee of £4.15 million in January 1999 and the Nigerian became an integral part of his team.

Kanu scored four times as a substitute that season and most memorably was a 15-minutes hat trick against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, coming off the bench when Arsenal were 2-0 down to turn the game to a 2-3 victory for the Gunners.

The Nigerian legend was part of the Invincible team that won the 2003/2004 Premier League title without losing a single game.

Wenger in his final season also bought Aubameyang in the 2018 January transfer window from Borussia Dortmund for a then club record fee of £56 million.

Aubameyang has been in fantastic goalscoring exploits since joining the North London side, Wenger says Kanu was his best winter window signing.

When asked to name his best January signing, Wenger told beIN Sports: “What a difficult question. Over 20 years… maybe Kanu.

“In the middle of the season, that had a big impact and was a huge player.”

Wenger said he is against opening the transfer window in the middle of the season (January) believing that clubs should finish the season with the same players.

“I think it is like a race in a marathon where you change the shoes half way,” Wenger added.

“It is not right, when once you have started the season, you have to finish the season with the same players. Or you keep it open the whole season like it was when I arrived in England. They have chosen a rule that is not right.”

Arsene Wenger left Arsenal in 2018 after spending 22-years with the Gunners and is currently working as Fifa’s Chief of Global Football Development.
