Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has expressed admiration for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress, following their historic performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Under the guidance of coach Rena Wakama, the D’Tigress achieved a landmark feat by becoming the first African team, male or female, to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympics. They secured their spot by defeating Canada, ranked fifth in the world, with a score of 79-70 in their final group stage match.
Troost-Ekong, who has been in the spotlight with his club PAOK in the Champions League qualifiers, took to X.com (formerly Twitter) to celebrate the D’Tigress’s achievement. He wrote, “Amazing achievement! Let’s go all the way!”
The 30-year-old defender, who captained the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, praised the Nigerian women’s team for their impressive victory.

The D’Tigress capitalized on Canadian mistakes, scoring 27 points from turnovers to clinch their nine-point win.
Looking ahead, the D’Tigress will face the United States in the quarter-finals. This follows their challenging group stage encounters, including a match against the host nation, France.
Troost-Ekong has also been performing well with PAOK, scoring the decisive goal in their UEFA Champions League qualifying match against Bosnian side Borac Banja Luka and contributing to a clean sheet in the second leg.
The D’Tigress’s remarkable journey in the Olympics has drawn praise from fans and fellow athletes alike, as they continue to make history on the global stage.
