‘Eguavoen is like Ancelotti’ – Mikel Obi

Nigerian football legend John Mikel Obi has showered praise on Augustine Eguavoen, the Super Eagles’ interim coach, drawing a surprising comparison between him and legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti.

This high praise follows Nigeria’s strong performances in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, where they triumphed over Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Mikel, who had the privilege of playing under some of the world’s top coaches, including Ancelotti during his time at Chelsea, was full of admiration for Eguavoen’s managerial approach.

“He reminds me so much of Carlo Ancelotti, no jokes,” Mikel revealed on his podcast, referencing the renowned Real Madrid boss, a five-time Champions League-winning coach.

The former Chelsea midfielder, who recently met Ancelotti in Spain, expanded on the comparison, stating: “His man management is top-notch. He speaks to players really well, he’s so humble, communicates with the squad effectively, puts his arms around you, and gets the players on his side. That is so important for any team.”

Mikel’s remarks highlight Eguavoen’s unique ability to connect with players on a personal level, something that resonated deeply with Mikel from his own experience. The duo shares a long history, with Eguavoen having coached Mikel during his time in Nigeria’s U-17 national team, adding depth to Mikel’s assessment of the current Super Eagles interim boss.

“Fantastic guy, lovely guy, a manager who gives you all the freedom in the world to express yourself,” Mikel continued. “He was my coach at U-17s and took us to the World Cup. That’s where I saw firsthand his ability to manage young talents.”

Mikel, reflecting on Eguavoen’s recent appointment, was impressed by the coach’s swift impact on the team despite the challenges of stepping in as an interim manager. He acknowledged that it’s difficult to make significant tactical changes in such a short time, but Eguavoen’s emphasis on man-management created a positive atmosphere.

“You can’t teach them much in such a short space of time. It’s about communication, making the players relaxed, and letting them perform,” Mikel observed.

The Super Eagles’ impressive victories in the AFCON qualifiers under Eguavoen have reignited debates about his future with the team. Many have called for the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to retain him as the permanent head coach, especially considering the uncertainties that come with frequent managerial changes.

“There’s so much going on when you come into the national team, with a new manager every time. It’s difficult, but Eguavoen has done a great job in getting the team to perform,” Mikel added.
