Super Eagles captain and PAOK FC defender William Troost-Ekong has made a surprising revelation about the reasons behind his decision to represent Nigeria over the Netherlands.
In a recent interview, Troost-Ekong shared the story of a life-changing phone call he received from former Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi. At just 20 years old, Troost-Ekong had completed his breakthrough season in the Netherlands, playing 22 games in the Eredivisie. He had also represented the Dutch U19 and U20 squads but had yet to receive a call-up to the senior team.
“I had to make the decision quite early in my career,” Troost-Ekong explained. “I was 20 at the time, and suddenly, I got a phone call from Stephen Keshi, who was the coach at the time. I was quite blown away that he called me.”
Keshi’s call presented Troost-Ekong with an opportunity to join the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national team. “When I got that call, it wasn’t necessarily the same situation as, for example, Olise from Bayern Munich, who could have played for France, Nigeria, Algeria, or England. He had all those options on the table,” Troost-Ekong said.
“For me, Nigeria was the only tangible option.”

Troost-Ekong carefully weighed his options, considering the potential benefits of playing for either country. “The choice was between trying to progress and, maybe later in my career, have a chance to play for the Netherlands, or seize the opportunity to play for the Super Eagles right now,” he said.

“At the time, the Super Eagles were going through a transition, and many of their defenders were a little older, so I knew they wanted to make changes.”
The young defender saw an opportunity to establish himself as a regular international player and potentially boost his club career. “I thought that if I could become an international at 21, I’d have a good chance of building a career afterward, if I did well,” Troost-Ekong revealed. Without hesitation, he accepted Keshi’s offer. “I said yes very quickly because I thought it was an opportunity I couldn’t miss.”
Troost-Ekong’s decision has paid off, with the defender now a regular fixture in the Super Eagles’ lineup. He has earned over 60 caps and played in several major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations.
Looking back, Troost-Ekong is proud of his choice. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’ve learned so much,” he said. “Representing Nigeria has given me a sense of purpose and responsibility.” His story serves as an inspiration to young players facing similar dilemmas, demonstrating the rewards of taking calculated risks and seizing opportunities.
Troost-Ekong continues to excel on the international stage, and his commitment to Nigeria remains unwavering. “I’m grateful for the chance to represent my country,” he concluded. “It’s an honor to wear the Super Eagles jersey.”
